Jenny’s Story: 22 years of making a difference through Short Break fostering

For over two decades, Jenny has been opening her home and heart to children and young people through fostering. Her journey began 22 years ago, inspired by her own experience as a single parent to a daughter with Down syndrome and a conversation with a foster carer who had supported her sister. That moment sparked a lifelong commitment to care.

Jenny is a Short Break Carer with Foster South Glos, part of the Share the Care programme—a vital service that offers planned, regular respite to families caring for children with disabilities. These short breaks give families time to recharge while their children enjoy safe, nurturing experiences with trained carers.

“It’s just so rewarding knowing you’re helping somebody out. You’re giving them a break. You’re making a change to somebody’s life,” Jenny says.

Jenny’s young person

Jenny’s current placement is a young man with complex health needs, including being PEG-fed. Despite the challenges, Jenny describes him as having a “wicked sense of humour” and a “brilliant character.” He stays with Jenny for two weekends a month—six overnights in total.

They spend their time enjoying simple but meaningful activities. He’s a real people person, so Jenny makes sure they’re out and about in the community. Whether it’s attending a local tea and cake afternoon (where he’s become quite the favourite among the older ladies), riding the bus, going for long walks, or listening to music, every moment is tailored to his interests and abilities.

Learning along the way

Jenny didn’t have specialist experience when she started. She learned everything along the way, supported by training from social services and guidance from the child’s parents. “The parents are a font of knowledge,” she says. “They’re the best ones to ask.”

Her relationship with the young man’s family is built on trust and mutual respect. Jenny recalls the moment his mum said, “You’ll have my prized possession, and I need to know you’ll look after him like I do.” That bond has grown so strong that Jenny now receives flowers and a card on Mother’s Day.

Jenny’s daughter, now 36, has always been part of the journey. “I always make sure she’s involved,” Jenny explains. Whether it’s helping choose clothes or preparing bath time, she plays an active role and often forms sibling-like bonds with the children who come to stay.”

While Jenny plans to continue caring for her current placement until he turns 18, she acknowledges that the physical demands are increasing. Still, she’s not ready to walk away from fostering. “I can still offer more,” she says, “maybe just not in the Share the Care sector.”

Her advice to anyone considering Short Break Fostering?

“Don’t think about it—look into it. Talk to somebody and do it. Pick up the phone and make the initial call.”

What is Share the Care?

Share the Care is a Short Break Fostering scheme run by South Gloucestershire Council. It provides regular, planned respite for families caring for children with disabilities. Carers offer overnight stays, weekends, or school holiday support, helping children experience new environments and giving families essential time to rest and recharge.

You don’t need specialist experience to become a Short Break Carer—just compassion, commitment, and a willingness to learn. Full training and ongoing support are provided.
