Thinking about becoming a foster carer? You’re not alone—and you’re in the right place. At South Gloucestershire Council, we’re here to guide and support you every step of the way. The journey to becoming an approved foster carer is thorough, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. With the right support, training, and encouragement, you can make a life-changing difference for a child in need.

Step 1: Get in Touch

To begin with, your fostering journey starts the moment you reach out to us. Whether you’ve seen an advert, heard about fostering from a friend, or found us online, we’re ready to help you explore whether fostering is right for you. Soon after, one of our friendly fostering team members will contact you to ask a few simple questions and explain the next steps.

Step 2: Home Visit

Next, we’ll arrange a home visit. This is an informal opportunity for us to get to know you better and for you to ask any questions you may have. At the same time, it’s a chance to explore whether you’d like to move forward with a formal application.

Step 3: Application Form

If you’re ready to take the next step, we’ll provide you with an application form. Once completed, this officially begins your fostering assessment. From this point onward, you’ll be assigned a dedicated social worker who will guide you through the process.

Step 4: Pre-Approval Training

Before your assessment progresses further, you’ll complete the Skills to Foster course. This essential training helps you understand what fostering involves, the types of children you may care for, and what support you can expect. Additionally, it’s a great opportunity to meet other applicants and build your confidence.

Step 5: Fostering Assessment

Following your training, your assessing social worker will visit you at home over several sessions. During this time, they’ll gather information about your background, lifestyle, and support network. They’ll also speak with your family and personal references. Ultimately, this stage helps us understand your strengths and how best to match you with a child or young person.

Step 6: Fostering Panel

Once your assessment is complete, you’ll attend a fostering panel alongside your social worker. The panel will review your application, ask a few questions, and make a recommendation based on your assessment. Rest assured, you’ll be fully supported throughout this stage.

Step 7: Approval

Finally, the decision is made by our fostering service manager. Once approved, you’ll be matched with a supervising social worker who will help prepare you for your first placement. From then on, you’ll be welcomed into our fostering community and offered ongoing training, support, and development opportunities.

Throughout your journey—and beyond—we’re here to support you. You’ll benefit from:
