Become a Specialist Foster Carer in South Gloucestershire
Do you have professional experience or a background in supporting children and young people with complex emotional or behavioural needs? We’re looking for compassionate, skilled individuals to become specialist foster carers and make a lasting difference in a young person’s life.

As a specialist foster carer, you’ll provide dedicated, full-time care in your own home for a child or young person with:
- Special educational needs (SEN)
- Disabilities
- Complex emotional or behavioural needs
You’ll play a vital role in helping them feel safe, supported, and understood.
What You’ll Need:
- Relevant experience, qualifications, or professional background in care, education, or support services
- A spare bedroom in your home
- The ability to provide 24-hour care for a child or young person in the care of South Gloucestershire Council
What You’ll Receive:
We offer comprehensive training, ongoing professional development, and specialist support to help you succeed in your role. You’ll also receive competitive payments that reflect your skills and commitment:
- Parent and Child Foster Carer – up to £37,700 per year*
- Step Down Foster Carer – up to £41,100 per year*
- Specialist Foster Carer – up to £32,100 per year*
- Short Break Foster Carer – up to £140 per 24 hours*
*Actual payments depend on the number of placements and the length of time a child or young person is in your care.
Support for carers
In return for being part of our team of short break carers, we offer a full package of training and support.
- Dedicated Supervising Social Worker: Ongoing advice and support before, during, and after placements.
- Child’s Social Worker: Helps you understand and respond to the child’s needs and behaviour.
- Training Programme: Includes Safeguarding, Paediatric First Aid, Autism Awareness, ADHD, mental health, and bespoke medical training.
- Support Groups: Regular sessions, social events, and groups for carers and children who foster.
- Peer Support (Buddying Scheme): Guidance from experienced carers during your first year.
