Being a foster carer is incredibly rewarding. From the small, everyday moments to the big milestones, trust and love grow over time. Trish’s fostering story describes this journey, though fostering can also bring bittersweet goodbyes.
Foster carer Trish shares a deeply personal reflection on one of those moments—the joy of connection and the heartache of letting go:
“I dropped you off at your grandparents this morning (where I was invited in for a cuppa). It was so lovely to see you happy, playing, and bonding with them.
I came home to pack more of your toys and spotted the dinosaurs you loved. Then I saw the Iggle Piggle teddy we bought together. You loved watching Iggle Piggle on TV and would copy the little girl at the end, circling your finger in Lee’s hand at bedtime.
My tears started and wouldn’t stop.
Later, I picked you up. Your little face lit up when you saw me. We spent a fun afternoon playing in the garden with the stones and the dogs.
My heart felt heavy. I knew it was our last time together. You didn’t understand the change coming. You didn’t know I wouldn’t be there tomorrow night to hold your hand or cuddle you when you’re upset.
Will you wonder where we are? Will you think we stopped loving you?
Tonight, I bathed you and washed your curly hair for the last time. I soothed you to sleep, hoping you felt safe enough to rest peacefully.
Tomorrow, I won’t be there when you wake up and smile at me with your big blue eyes.
You pointed to the curtains and clapped when I opened them, like I’d done something amazing.
You came into our lives and brightened every day.
You will always be part of our family. We love you—always.”
