Every March, World Social Work Month gives us a moment to pause, reflect and honour the people who dedicate their work—and often their hearts—to supporting children, young people and families. This year, our Service Manager Aimee Williams created something special to mark the occasion: a poem titled “The Vine and the Branches.”
The poem, shared through a short video, beautifully captures the spirit of our work. Using the metaphor of a living vine strengthened by its many branches, Aimee celebrates the power of connection, collaboration and community across Fostering, WAYPOINT and the wider children’s social care teams.
The Vine and the Branches
Like branches of a living vine that stretch towards the light,
Our teams grow ever stronger still when working side by side.
Fostering is commitment, it is opening hearts and homes,
And through so many different strengths, a place of care is grown.
Where differences are valued, and each voice can find its place,
Where culture, faith, identity are held with tender grace.
For some young people carry stories heavy, hard to share,
Yet woven close in shared resolve, we build connection there.
Fostering and WAYPOINT each bring everything they can,
Reminding us that change is never shaped by just one hand.
No single branch can hold the weight of all that people bear,
But rooted in community, we show them someone’s there.
We challenge wrong, we question norms, we strive for equity,
So every branch may stretch and grow in strength and dignity.
“Harambee” calls us all, through challenge, doubt and fear,
To strive to pull together with the values we hold dear.
Through learning and reflection guiding everything we do,
We grow a practice thoughtful, fair, and hold our values true.
We understand that trauma lives in places hard to see,
And behaviour often tells us things a person cannot speak.
We walk beside each family with guidance, time, and care,
And meet them where they’re standing, as they are, no matter where.
We strengthen bonds where possible, help fractured ties renew,
And hold a steady presence as some hope comes into view.
And like the careful tending of a vine that’s grown with care,
We nurture strong communities so hope can flourish there.
For it truly is a privilege to give a child a home.
And it really takes a village, no-one does this all alone.
Just like the vine that binds us all, unseen yet deeply strong,
Our shared commitment holds the space where kindness can belong.
So, in this month of social work, we celebrate the chance,
To build a kinder future and connect each vine to branch.
*Harambee is a Swahili term that translates to “all pull together” or “let’s work together” in English, reflecting the spirit of cooperation and mutual assistance within a community.
Growing hope, together
“The Vine and the Branches” reminds us that fostering community is much like tending a living plant. Social workers nurture, advocate, connect and steady the path forward—often during some of the hardest moments in a family’s life.
And while no single branch can carry the weight alone, together we build something strong, supportive and full of hope.
As we celebrate World Social Work Month, we extend our heartfelt thanks to all our social workers and children’s services teams. Your commitment makes a difference every day, and the impact of your work stretches far beyond what can be seen.

What is children’s social care?
Sometimes, a child, young person or their family needs extra support to stay well and safe. That’s when children’s social care steps in—when that support becomes essential.
Families might need a helping hand at different points in their lives. Our services are designed to offer the right support at the right time, always with respect, fairness and a strong sense of partnership.
South Gloucestershire Council work with children and young people who:
- Need help maintaining their health or development
- Live with a disability
- Require protection
- Are fostered, adopted or living in residential care
Our dedicated social care professionals—including our social workers—carry out assessments and provide advice, guidance and services.
This may include:
- Assessing a child’s, young person’s or family’s needs
- Providing immediate, practical help
- Signposting to other relevant organisations
- Coordinating with other professionals to ensure the right support is in place
Everything we do is rooted in understanding, compassion and the belief that every child deserves safety, belonging and the chance to thrive.
