Fostering is one of the most meaningful ways to make a lasting impact in a child or young person’s life. Every child deserves a safe, stable, and supportive home—and you could be the person who provides it.
Foster carers come from all walks of life. Whether you’re single or in a relationship, working or retired, renting or owning your home, what matters most is your ability to offer time, care, and consistency. At South Gloucestershire Council, we welcome people from all backgrounds, cultures, and experiences—because our children are just as diverse.
You don’t need formal qualifications to become a foster carer. What you do need is compassion, patience, and a willingness to learn. We’ll provide full training and ongoing support to help you develop the skills and confidence to meet the needs of the children in your care.
Just as every child is unique, so is every foster carer. That’s why we’re looking for people with a wide range of life experiences, skills, and qualities. Whether you’ve raised your own children, worked with young people, or simply have the heart to help, you could be the difference a child needs.
Who Can Foster?
You could foster if you are:
- A single person or part of a couple (including same-sex couples)
- A homeowner or renting
- Working full-time, part-time, or not currently employed
- From any cultural, ethnic, or religious background
As long as you have the time, energy, and space to care for a child, we’d love to hear from you.
Essential Criteria
To become a foster carer, you’ll need to meet the following requirements:
- Be at least 21 years old
- Have a spare bedroom suitable for a child or young person
- Be a full-time resident in the UK or have indefinite leave to remain
- Be able to provide consistent care, often on a full-time basis
