When people first think about fostering, one of the biggest questions they ask is: “Could I really do this?”
It’s a fair question. Fostering is one of the most rewarding things you can do , but it can also feel like a big step into the unknown.
That’s exactly why we’re proud we offer the Mockingbird Family Model: a pioneering approach to fostering that ensures you’re never doing it alone.
What makes Mockingbird different?
The Mockingbird model of fostering is designed to reduce isolation and improve stability for both carers and children.
You become part of a constellation — a structured support network built around:
Key benefits of the Mockingbird fostering model:
- Ongoing support for foster carers: You always have someone to talk to, ask advice from, or lean on.
- Peer support and shared experiences: Other foster carers understand exactly what you’re going through.
- Planned breaks and stay-over care: Support from your hub home helps you recharge when needed.
- Stronger outcomes for children: Children build friendships and stay within stable, connected networks.
One local carer shared:
“Feeling part of a community is really important because fostering could feel quite isolated otherwise.”
A community that connects you
A key part of the Mockingbird fostering model is creating genuine community connections.
Through regular events, activities, and meet‑ups, foster carers and children have the chance to:
- Build meaningful relationships
- Share experiences in a supportive space
- Reduce feelings of isolation
- Enjoy time together as part of a wider fostering family
As one carer explains:
“We just have to arrive with our children and have a good time.”

All fostering enquiries are handled first by our partners, Fostering South West (also known as the regional hub). The hub brings together enquiries for all local authorities across the South West. They aim to contact you within two days of your enquiry for an initial chat to help you decide whether fostering is right for you. If it is, the hub passes your enquiry to us (South Gloucestershire Council), and we support you through the rest of your fostering journey.
