National Care Leavers Month: Supporting young people to thrive

November is National Care Leavers Month. It is a time to celebrate the achievements, strengths and resilience of care-experienced young people. In addition, it is a time to recognise the journeys they take as they move into adulthood.

At South Gloucestershire Council, we’re proud to support care leavers as they develop independence, pursue their ambitions and build bright futures. Throughout the month, we’re joining organisations nationwide in recognising the valuable contribution care-experienced young people make to our communities. Furthermore, we are highlighting the importance of ensuring they have the support they need to thrive.

Many care leavers achieve remarkable things, whether that’s progressing into further education, starting a career, securing their own home, or developing the skills and confidence needed for independent living. Their determination, resilience and achievements deserve to be celebrated.

Watch: A message from Councillor Simon Johnson

To mark National Care Leavers Month, Councillor Simon Johnson, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, has recorded a short video message. This message recognises the achievements of care-experienced young people. Moreover, it reaffirms South Gloucestershire Council’s commitment to supporting them as they take their next steps into adulthood.

Amplifying young people’s voices

Later this month, some of South Gloucestershire’s care-experienced young people will attend United for Change for Care Leavers, a national event. The event brings together young people from across the country to discuss the issues that matter most to them. Additionally, the event provides an opportunity for care leavers to share their experiences. As a result, they can influence change and help shape services for future generations.

Support beyond care

Leaving care doesn’t mean leaving support behind.

South Gloucestershire Council’s Leaving Care Service works alongside young people to help them navigate adulthood, offering support with:

  • Accommodation and housing
  • Education, employment and training
  • Financial advice and practical support
  • Health and wellbeing
  • Developing independent living skills
  • Building and maintaining positive relationships

Every care leaver is entitled to ongoing support, with Personal Advisers available to help young people achieve their goals and access the services they need.

As we celebrate National Care Leavers Month, we encourage our communities, partners and residents to join us. Join in recognising the achievements of care-experienced young people and championing their aspirations for the future.
