Do I need experience to become a foster carer?
No. You don’t need professional childcare qualifications or previous fostering experience to become a foster carer. Many foster carers come from a wide range of backgrounds and bring different skills, experiences and life lessons to the role.
At South Gloucestershire Council, we’re looking for people who can provide a safe, stable and nurturing home for children and young people. What’s most important is your willingness to learn, your ability to care for others and your commitment to making a difference.
Do you need qualifications to foster?
No. There are no formal qualifications required to become a foster carer.
You don’t need a teaching qualification, childcare certificate or social work degree. We provide all the training and support you’ll need to begin your fostering journey.
What matters most is that you’re open to learning and able to meet the needs of a child or young person.
What kind of experience is helpful?
While professional experience isn’t required, many people already have valuable skills that can help them become successful foster carers.
You may have gained experience through:
- Parenting your own children
- Caring for relatives
- Working with children or young people
- Volunteering
- Supporting friends or family members
- Life experiences that have helped you develop resilience and understanding
Every household brings different strengths, and there’s no such thing as a “typical” foster carer.
What makes a good foster carer?
Children in care need people who are:
- Patient
- Understanding
- Reliable
- Flexible
- Good listeners
- Emotionally resilient
- Committed to helping children thrive
Children need carers who are willing to learn, adapt and provide a caring home environment.
What training will I receive?
Before becoming approved, you’ll complete training designed to help you understand fostering and the needs of children in care.
This includes our Skills to Foster training, which explores:
- Why children come into care
- Child development
- Safeguarding
- Understanding behaviour
- Building positive relationships
- Working with professionals
Once approved, you’ll continue to receive ongoing learning and development opportunities throughout your fostering journey.
Will I receive support?
Absolutely. When you foster with South Gloucestershire Council, you’ll never be expected to do it alone.
You’ll receive:
- A dedicated supervising social worker
- 24/7 support, 365 days a year
- Ongoing training and development
- Therapeutic support through WAYPOINT
- Access to the Mockingbird support network
- Regular support groups and coffee mornings
Many foster carers tell us that the support they receive helps them build confidence and develop new skills over time.
Can I foster if I’ve never looked after children before?
Yes. Some foster carers have extensive experience with children, while others have very little.
During the assessment process, we’ll explore your experiences, strengths and support network to understand how fostering could work for you. We’ll also help you identify any areas where you may need additional support or training, or opportunities to gain experience.
Don’t rule yourself out
Some of our best foster carers once thought they weren’t experienced enough to foster.
The truth is that fostering isn’t about being an expert. It’s about providing stability, kindness and a safe home where children can feel valued and supported.
