What do foster carers get paid?
Foster carers with South Gloucestershire Council receive a weekly allowance to cover the cost of caring for a child. This amount varies depending on the child’s age, needs, and the type of care provided. On average, carers receive £537 per week, per child
In addition to the basic allowance, carers receive:
- Birthday and holiday allowances to help children celebrate special moments
- School uniform and clothing support
- Mileage reimbursement at 45p per mile for school runs, appointments, and family time
- Additional support for school trips and holidays abroad
What about foster carer fees?
Beyond the child’s allowance, foster carers also receive a professional fee based on their experience and training level. These fees range from £182 to £611 per week, per child, depending on your banding level
All new carers start at Band 1, but with training and development, you can progress to higher bands — and higher earnings.
Is it tax-tree?
Most foster carers benefit from Qualifying Care Relief, a special tax exemption for foster care income. As of the latest update, the annual tax-free threshold has increased to £18,140 per household, plus additional relief per child. This means many carers don’t pay income tax on their fostering income.
