We’re proud to offer the Mockingbird Family Model, a pioneering approach to foster care that builds extended family-style support networks for foster carers, children, and young people.
Developed by The Fostering Network, the Mockingbird Family Model is transforming foster care across the UK. It focuses on creating strong, stable relationships between foster families. It helps reduce placement breakdowns, improves wellbeing, and gives everyone involved a greater sense of belonging.
What is the Mockingbird Family Model?
The Mockingbird Family Model connects up to 10 fostering households into a supportive group called a constellation. At the centre of each constellation is a Hub Home Carer—an experienced foster carer who offers guidance, emotional support, and practical help to the other families.
This model mirrors the structure of an extended family. It encourages carers to support one another, share experiences, and build lasting relationships. Because of this, foster carers feel more confident. At the same time, children benefit from greater stability and connection.
Benefits of the Mockingbird Family Model

The role of the Hub Home Carer
A Hub Home Carer plays a key role in the success of the Mockingbird Family Model. Not only do they act as a mentor and organiser, but they also provide trusted support for the entire constellation.
They arrange regular activities—like family days out, coffee mornings, and group outings—that help build strong bonds between carers and children. They also offer hands-on help, such as school runs, attending meetings, or providing emergency care when needed.
Most importantly, they create a safe and supportive environment where everyone feels valued and connected.
