New Mockingbird Constellation Launches in Pilning to Support Foster Families in South Gloucestershire.
A new Mockingbird Constellation has officially launched in Pilning, South Gloucestershire, providing vital support to 8 fostering families and 15 children and young people. This marks the fourth constellation in the area, further strengthening the local fostering community.
What is the Mockingbird Model?
The Mockingbird programme, developed by The Fostering Network, is a pioneering approach to foster care. It creates a supportive network of foster families, known as a “constellation”, with a central hub home led by experienced foster carers. These hub carers offer practical and emotional support, regular social activities, and short breaks for the families in their group.
This model mirrors the natural support systems found in extended families. It helps reduce isolation, improves placement stability, and builds strong, lasting relationships between carers and children.
Pilning constellation launches during Foster Care Fortnight
The launch of the Pilning constellation comes at a perfect time — during Foster Care Fortnight, the UK’s biggest campaign to raise awareness of fostering. The new constellation is led by dedicated hub carers Wendy and Bill, who bring warmth, experience, and a deep commitment to supporting others.
Their home will serve as a welcoming space for foster families to connect, share experiences, and access support when they need it most.
Positive impact in South Gloucestershire
South Gloucestershire Council has embraced the Mockingbird model as part of its commitment to improving outcomes for children in care. Since the first constellation launched, the programme has:
